DESCRIPTION

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Intense gameplay, Excellent Story, Buggy Bethesda Had some issues right off the bat with innumerous CTD. After the updates and multiple tweaks, this game is phenominal. Bethesda has never let me down and I love the 20+ hours ive put into it so far.

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful world, tense gameplay, uneven pacing I started Prey a couple months after playing Alien: Isolation and had high hopes that it would capture some of the tense, nail-biting suspense of that title. Prey didn't disappoint. Prey is set in an alternate history where the space exploration took a decided horrific turn (evidenced by the alien monstrosities seen in the trailers). The pinnacle of this alternative space race is Talos 1, a giant art-deco space station orbiting the moon. Dwarfing the Empire State Building (with exterior architecture reminiscent of a skyscraper or cathedral), the station is the setting for Prey. While the graphics look a little dated for a brand new game, the overall design level design works well. The administrative sections of the station have an art-deco opulence that is contrasted with the claustrophobic utilitarianism of the core systems. The first EVA is breath-taking as the player first grasps the scale of the space station. The world is richly developed, with lots of discoverable information (email threads, printouts, history books, audio logs, passwords, optional door codes) beyond the mission-critical requirements. In this regard, Prey is reminiscent of Deus Ex’s expansive world-building. I expect additional play-throughs to yield more pieces of interesting back story. More important than visuals or world-building, the gameplay works well. I was looking for tension and horror jump-scares rather than running-and-gunning. Medkits and mechanical parts litter the station - and a crafting system allows you to cannibalize junk to make new items - but ammo remains scarce. While the aliens aren’t invincible, the lack of ammo forces the player to engage in nail-biting stealth with the knowledge that a misstep will lead to a difficult encounter. Some enemies can mimic everyday objects, forcing players to stay alert for chairs or mugs that suddenly transform into nimble monsters. With the exception of mimics, which are easily melee’ed, engaging tougher enemies usually means exhausting what little ammo you’ve scrounged. The “psychoscope” mechanic allows you to spot hidden mimics and track enemies at the cost of reduced FOV and visual clarity. The varied environments contribute to the unease, with expansive living areas leaving players vulnerable to attack and twisting utility corridors leaving the player nowhere to run. Finally, there are the powers, granted via “NeuroMods”. The initial roster of human-designed powers are mostly passive, granting new crafting/weapon modding abilities, increased health, etc. Once the action begins, the psychoscope can be used to research enemies (like the research camera in Bioshock) to unlock their offensive powers as NeuroMod options. I’ve been playing a human-only power-set so far, so I can’t really comment on the utility of the alien mods. My only problem with the game is its pacing. Prey can’t quite make up its mind whether it wants to be a hub-based open-world exploration game or a fast-paced thriller. Without spoilers, the main plot story elements hint at high stakes (the destruction of humanity if alien contamination reaches earth), but the suspense and impetus to complete the main story missions is diluted by the open-world exploration. All of the optional information and side quests scattered through the world pull players away from the main quest, making the (implied) countdown to disaster feel false. In that sense, Prey undermines its own tone by pulling players between a ticking clock that increases the tension and a slower-paced (albeit enjoyable) desire to explore. Twenty hours in and it hasn’t disappointed me yet. Recommended.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loving it! I discovered the game barely two weeks before its launch and played the demo. As a former Bioshock player, it definitely has a familiar feel when it comes to item acquisition and weapon upgrading. The game takes a few hours of getting used to partially due to the speed of the enemies and this weird movement delay. Luckily, I hardly notice it now and I believe others can adapt as well, especially because of better abilities later on in the game. I love, love, love the sound design. If possible, I'll be searching out the soundtrack in the future. The story of Morgan, Alex, and the station is confusing at first but I believe as players finish and do a little world exploring it all comes together well enough. I don't buy many games per year, but I am happy to say that I can fully recommend this. Its a haunting good time and one that I will definitely get a few playthroughs on.
